This case study aims to critically analyse an episode of care in relation to a patient suffering from complex health care needs. The focus of the assignment includes three aspects of care: depression, malnutrition and their relationship to lung cancer. In accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC): The Code (2015), the details of this case study will maintain confidentiality at all times through the use of the pseudonyms. Mrs. Warley is a 37-year-old woman who lives with her partner in rented accommodation. The couple do not have any children. Mrs. Warley’s past medical history includes depression and anorexia nervosa, conditions from which she has suffered since her teenage years. She was a heavy smoker for most of her life, believing that the habit would prevent weight gain. She was recently diagnosed with limited-stage small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) (Meerbeck et al, 2011). Mrs. Warley’s depression and anorexia have always been interrelated, but now have t he additional burden of lung cancer impacting them. The anorexia and depression also negatively affect any cancer treatment. Mrs. Warley’s perspective of her situation is pessimistic, she feels that her outlook is bleak. As supported by Apar et al (2007), these fears are warranted as prognosis for SLCL is poor, with the median survival after treatment being approximately 15 months, and one in four patients surviving 2 years.
